Description

Crocknaboghill is a secluded hearth-lobby entry vernacular house dating from between 1820 and 1839, retaining much of its original character. It occupies a pleasant wooded elevated site and, together with its outbuildings and turf house, forms a vernacular group of some interest. The house is accessed from the road by a long winding lane and is well sheltered by mature trees.

The building is a one-and-a-half storey structure with three bays, aligned west to east on a lane to the west of Crocknaboghill Townland. The pitched corrugated metal roof, which has been raised in two courses of concrete blocks, is fitted with three lime-rendered chimneys—one to each gable and one to the party wall between the left and central bays. A timber eaves board supports half-round metal rainwater goods, with plain timber bargeboards to each gable. The walls are constructed of lime-rendered coursed rubble stone.

The principal elevation faces south. The central bay contains a timber-sheeted door accessed by two stone steps, positioned just to the left of centre, with a window to its right. The left and right bays each have a window at centre. A small window opening to the upper level, set to the right of centre, appears in the left gable. Windows are one-over-two timber top-hung casements covered with protective perspex, with stone cills.

The rear elevation features a central window (detailed as on the front but smaller) in the left and right bays. The central bay has a large three-over-three sliding sash window with narrower outside panes and a timber lintel, positioned to the left of centre. The right gable has a window opening to the upper floor, set to the left of centre. Ghost marks on the walls indicate a former lower outbuilding with a pitched roof; all walls of this structure are gone except that to the south, which contains a door opening at the extreme left.

To the southwest is a turf house with a pitched corrugated metal roof (raised on two courses of concrete blocks) and lime-rendered rubble stone walls. The north gable has been sheeted with corrugated metal and contains a large opening. Five tall narrow ventilation openings are present—three to the east elevation and two to the west—while the south gable is blank.

A single-storey outbuilding to the rear has a pitched corrugated metal roof and lime-rendered rubble stone walls. It features doors to either end of the yard-facing elevation, the left door being timber and groove-sheeted. A small square fixed-pane window sits below eaves level to the left of centre, with a tall ventilation slit to the right of centre. The rear elevation is cement-rendered and blank, as is the right gable. A lower lean-to shed abuts the left gable, with a monopitched corrugated metal roof, a large opening to the yard-facing elevation, and a small square opening to the rear.

A building is shown at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey six-inch map of County Fermanagh.
