Description

No. 4 Seaview Terrace is a two-storey three-bay terraced house of rough-hewn white limestone with red brick detailing, built around 1872 as part of a terrace of nine similar dwellings. It was constructed to house workers for the Glenariff Iron Ore & Harbour Company, a railway and harbour enterprise established in 1872 that operated a narrow-gauge railway transporting iron ore from the Cloughcor mines at Glenariff to cargo ships. The railway operated for only three years, ceasing in 1875, and the terrace became known as "the railway cottages" following a lease dated 1875.

The house sits on an elevated site on the south side of Garron Road overlooking Red Bay, with a small sloping front garden enclosed to the road by hedging and rubblestone walls with concrete steps descending to the roadway. A shared concrete paved walkway runs in front of the entire terrace.

The pitched natural slate roof features black clay ridge tiles and red brick chimneystacks at either end, shared with adjoining houses. Steel guttering sits to a timber box fascia with steel downpipes. The coursed and snecked limestone walling is laid with cement pointing. Window and door openings are camber-headed with flush brick quoined surrounds, red sandstone sills, and replacement 2/2 sliding timber sash windows with ogee horns.

The three-bay front elevation comprises a paired ground floor window opening to the left and a central door opening with a replacement timber panelled and glazed door. The three-bay rear elevation mirrors the front and includes a single-storey return to the right, shared with the adjoining No. 5A. The house adjoins No. 3 Seaview Terrace to the southwest and No. 5A to the northeast.

The Glenariff Iron Ore & Harbour Company defaulted on its rent to the Earl of Antrim in 1885 and was forced to sell its assets. In that year, No. 4 was valued at £3 and 10 shillings and occupied by Mr. W. Burrell. The Burrell family continued to occupy the house until the 1940s. During the First General Revaluation of Property in Northern Ireland (1936–57) the house was valued at £6 and noted as being leased to tenants by the Reverend Father O'Rawe, parish priest at the neighbouring Church of St. Patrick and St. Brigid. Hannah Burrell vacated the site around 1945, and occupancy changed frequently over the following three decades. By the Second General Revaluation (1956–72) the value had risen to £9, with the house leased to Mr. Henry O'Neill by the church trustees.

The house retains some late nineteenth-century appearance with original window openings, but the interior has been modernised and it has lost some authenticity. While it continues to be occupied as a private dwelling and holiday home and is of local interest, it does not meet the statutory test for listing.
