Description
Number 3 Seaview Terrace is a two-storey terraced house constructed around 1872 as part of a terrace of nine similar dwellings. It is located on an elevated site on the south-east side of Garron Road overlooking Red Bay, in the townland of Carrivemurphy.
The house was built to accommodate workers employed by the Glenariff Iron Ore & Harbour Company, a railway and harbour concern established in 1872. The company operated a narrow-gauge railway line that transported iron ore from the Cloughcor mines at Glenariff to cargo ships bound for England and Scotland. The railway operated for only three years before ceasing use in 1875. A lease dated 1875 records that the terrace was originally known as "the railway cottages". The Glenariff Iron Ore & Harbour Company defaulted on its rent to the Earl of Antrim in 1885 and was forced to sell off all its assets in the area. The terrace does not appear in the Annual Revisions records until 1885, when Number 3 was valued at £3 and 10 shillings and occupied by Mr Daniel Delargy. By the 1936–57 revaluation, the property had been leased out to tenants by the Reverend Father O'Rawe, parish priest at the neighbouring Church of St Patrick and St Brigid. The house was occupied by Mr Michael Smith around 1930 and continued to be occupied by the Smith family until at least the 1970s. By the 1956–72 revaluation, the house was owned by the church trustees and valued at £9. The house continues in use as a private dwelling and holiday home.
The building is constructed of coursed and snecked rough-hewn white limestone with cement pointing. It has a pitched natural slate roof with black clay ridge tiles and red brick chimneystacks at either end, shared with adjoining houses. Steel guttering runs to a timber box fascia with steel downpipes. The front elevation comprises two bays across two storeys. It features camber-headed red brick window and door openings with flush brick quoined surrounds and red sandstone sills. The ground floor contains a pair of windows to the right and a central door opening with a vertically-sheeted and glazed timber door and overlight. The original windows are 2/2 sliding timber sash windows with ogee horns. The door opens onto a concrete paved walkway shared with the entire terrace. The north-east side adjoins Number 4 Seaview Terrace, and the south-west side adjoins Number 2. The rear elevation contains two modern dormer windows to the rear roof slope and replacement timber top-hung windows to first-floor level. The ground floor has been extended to the rear with a small lean-to and a larger monopitch return. While the front elevation retains much of its original simple late nineteenth-century appearance, the rear has lost some authenticity through replacement windows and modern dormer additions. The house forms part of a terrace of nine similar dwellings set on an elevated site on the south side of Garron Road. Each dwelling has a small sloping front garden enclosed to the road by hedging and rubblestone walls, with concrete steps descending to the road.
