38 Ballyblack Road, Ballyblack, Millisle, Newtownards, Co Down, BT22 2AZ

This is a single-storey, gabled dwelling of probable early nineteenth-century origin, located just off the north side of Ballyblack Road, approximately two miles west of Carrowdore. The house appears largely original externally.

The front, south-facing facade features a sheeted timber door with a small glazed panel, positioned slightly right of centre. It has a simple surround with a decorated keystone. To the left of the door are three sash windows with horizontal glazing bars and plain surrounds; two similar windows are located to the right of the door. The west gable is blank. A small lean-to shed is attached to the east gable, while the gable itself is otherwise blank. The rear facade has a partly glazed door positioned left of centre, with a two-pane window to the right. The entire facade is covered in rough cast render. Chamfered quoins are visible on the front. The roof is pitched and covered with asbestos slates, partially obscured by climbing plant stems. Three brick chimney stacks are present, along with cast iron rainwater goods. Outbuildings are located to the east.

The house is documented on Ordnance Survey maps of 1833/4 and 1858-60. Both maps show a small building slightly to the south, at the entrance to the lane leading to the house, labelled ‘School house,’ which no longer exists. Valuation records from the 1830s, Ordnance Survey maps, Griffith's valuation of 1863, and related primary sources from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland provide further historical context. The building is considered to be vernacular in style.
