Description
The site represents the former location of a single-storey dwelling, likely dating to the early nineteenth century, which was demolished relatively recently, around 1996, and superseded by a modern house built on part of the same ground. The original cottage featured a rear extension, gabled ends, and a slated roof. It had rendered chimneys, rendered and lined walls painted, and two double-hung windows with horizontal astragals and moulded architraves. The central doorway was characterised by a segmental arch with a moulded archivolt, fluted and panelled pilasters, a plain fanlight, and a recent flush door. The site is situated on the south side of Ballyblack Road, approximately two miles west of Carrowdore. A building appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1858-60, and valuation records from the 1830s and 1863 confirm its existence within the townland of Ballyblack, in the parish of Newtownards.
