Description
This is a two-storey farmhouse, dating to the 1840s, built onto a substantially older, single-storey building, which now forms a return section. The property is situated at the end of a short lane on the west side of Ballycastle Road, approximately two miles west of Carrowdore.
The two-storey section is largely original, though now featuring PVC windows. The older single-storey section has been modernised externally, but retains original interior detailing. The front, southeast-facing facade features a central timber-panelled door within a sandstone surround, topped with a semicircular fanlight. To the left of the door is a PVC window that mimics a Georgian sash window, with simulated panes. Similar windows are located to the left and three smaller, evenly spaced windows are positioned on the first floor. The facade is constructed of rubble and is unrendered, exhibiting smooth render surrounds and rendered, chamfered quoins. The northeast gable is rough cast rendered with plain quoins and a PVC window on the first floor. The southwest gable is similarly rendered, with a PVC window, resembling the front, on the ground floor.
Attached to the rear of the main house is a long, single-storey return section, which represents the original house. This section has been modernised with a brick porch and enlarged windows featuring modern frames. A small, four-pane timber window is situated on the centre of the first floor of the main house, directly above the return section’s roof. The main house roof is pitched and covered with Bangor blue slates, while the return section’s roof is similarly pitched but covered with concrete tiles. Two gable chimney stacks, constructed of yellow brick, are present on the main house, and two recent red brick stacks are on the return. The return section is largely rough cast rendered. Cast iron and PVC rainwater goods are used. Outbuildings are situated to the northeast.
The original section of the property, which now functions as the return, and the outbuildings, are depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1833/4. Based on historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps and valuation records, the main two-storey house was constructed sometime between approximately 1834 and 1858, likely in the 1840s. The earliest elements of the property are believed to date back to the 18th century.
