Description

Two storey late Victorian gabled farmhouse of c.1880s-90s with moulded surrounds to openings, set at the end of a short lane just off the Mountstewart Road, roughly 2 miles north of Greyabbey. Entire house finished in rough cast render with chamfered quoins to front and gables. Bangor blue slates to all roofs with two brick chimney stacks to the gables of the main house and one to the gable of the return. PVC rw goods. Large farm buildings to E and N. The front S elevation is symmetrical and has central timber glazed door and plain fanlight all encased by fluted pilasters, frieze lintel, cornice and curved blocking course. To left of doorway is modern two pane timber window with simple moulded surround and keystone, with similar window to right. First floor has a set of paired windows to left and right with a single window in the centre all set within segmental arch headed openings. The window frames are similar to the ground floor with similar simple moulding and keystone. W gable has a window to the left on the ground floor, as ground floor front with a similar, but smaller, window directly above. E gable has a small store, with mono pitched roof, attached to the ground floor (the other side of this store is attached to a long farm building which runs at a right angle to the house), and a window (as W gable) to right on first floor. The rear has a full height gabled return with various modern timber windows, with smooth cement surrounds, and a tall but narrow lean to extension attached to its gable. The rear of the main house has a ground floor window, as ground floor front but with simple smooth cement surround, to left of return. To the right of the return on the main house is a timber and glazed rear door. On the opposite side of the Mountstewart Road from this property, is a large modernised gabled dwelling known as ‘Ballygrangee House’ which appears to be possibly older than this property, and may have been locally important at one time.
