Description
The Poplars is a large, two-storey farmhouse likely built in the mid-19th century, with extensions probably added in the later 1800s or early 1900s, and recently renovated. It is situated at the end of a lane on the southeastern side of Ballyblack Road, approximately one mile northwest of Carrowdore.
The main, northwest-facing facade features a centrally positioned doorway now enclosed by a large, modern flat-roofed porch/conservatory. To the right of the doorway is a modern timber window, with two similarly sized, unevenly spaced windows to the left. Four unevenly spaced windows are situated on the first floor. The northeastern gable is blank, while the southwestern gable has a modern window similar to those on the front facade on the ground floor. The rear facade's first floor has three varying-sized, unevenly spaced modern windows. A small, single-storey, hipped-roof projection/extension is located to the right on the ground floor of the rear facade, featuring a modern door to the rear and a modern window facing the northeast. Modern windows are positioned on either side of this projection. The facade is finished with a ‘salt and pepper’ dry-dash render, accented by smooth rendered surrounds to openings, wall edges, and the base. Smooth render cill bands are present on the first floor front and on the gables. The pitched roof is covered in Bangor blue slates, with three unevenly spaced yellow brick chimney stacks. The roof features PVC rainwater goods. The northeastern portion of the house, between the two northeastern chimney stacks, appears to have been added or converted at some stage, disrupting the front facade's symmetry. This section may have originally been a single-storey barn or outbuilding attached to the northeastern gable.
A structure is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1833/4 on this general site, although its position and orientation do not precisely match the current dwelling. By the revised Ordnance Survey map from approximately 1858-60, a building was shown on the exact site. Therefore, the house likely dates from sometime between the 1830s and approximately 1860, however, its asymmetric appearance and yellow brick chimneys suggest later 19th or early 20th century extensions.
