Ashbrook, 32 Grangee Road, Ballyblack, Millisle, Newtownards, Co Down, BT22 2JB

Ashbrook, formerly a single-storey house of possible early nineteenth-century origin, was located on the south side of Grangee Road, approximately one mile northwest of Carrowdore, Millisle, Newtownards. The original building was demolished relatively recently, around 1985, and a modern dwelling now occupies the site nearby. The first Ordnance Survey map of 1833/4 shows a small building at this location, and the revised Ordnance Survey maps of 1858-60 depict a slightly longer structure. The original cottage is described as having a corrugated asbestos roof, gable ends, roughcast walls painted white on the front, two horizontal astragal windows, a central sheeted door, and plain yellow painted architraves to all openings. A lower shed extension was present on the right-hand gable with a metal casement. Historical records from the 1830s, including Valuation records, Ordnance Survey maps, and the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland, and Griffith’s Valuation records from 1863, confirm the building’s presence and evolution over time. The site is in private ownership and is not listed.
