Description

This is a two-storey house, likely dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, situated on the southeastern side of Main Street in Carrowdore, near Newtownards. It is considered one of the oldest, if not the oldest, dwellings in the village. The front, or northwestern, facade retains a vernacular simplicity, despite recent replacement window surrounds. A centrally positioned, timber-framed door is set within a plain, rendered "shouldered" surround. To the right of the door are two windows with modern timber frames and matching surrounds. A window to the left of the door is similarly treated, with four more windows of the same style on the first floor. The gables are blank.

The rear facade features a small kitchen extension with a sheeted door and a modern window. To the left of this extension is a likely enlarged window with a modern frame, and a matching window to the right. There are no first-floor windows on the rear elevation. A recent breeze block structure supports a water tank at the far left of the rear. The entire facade is finished with rough cast rendering. The pitched roof is covered in 'Tullycavey' slates, which have been tarred at the rear, and shows some signs of collapse. Three rendered chimney stacks are present, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

A plaque, positioned between the second and third windows on the front facade, indicates 1943, the year the facade was re-rendered with smooth surrounds to the window openings. Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1858-60, and deeds dating back to at least 1800, confirm a building occupied the site. The building's origins are consistent with local tradition suggesting an 18th-century date, and it has largely retained its original form, despite the recent window replacements.
