Description
This is a former school house, now a dwelling, built in 1903-1904. It is situated on the east side of Main Street, at the north end of the village of Carrowdore, near Newtownards, County Down. The building is roughly cruciform in plan and constructed of dark rubble with sandstone dressings, quoins, and courses. The roof is largely gabled and covered in Bangor blue slate.
The architectural style incorporates decorative shaped gables, reminiscent of Jacobean or Dutch designs, to each elevation. A glazed decorative cupola, topped with a lead sheeted ogee roof and finial, sits at the intersection of the four gabled sections. The west-facing front facade features a prominent central projecting gable with a large mullioned and transomed window, surmounted by a decorative sandstone panel bearing an inscription. Smaller gables flank this central gable, each containing an entrance with chamfered sandstone dressings, a timber double door, and an elliptical arch fanlight, with sandstone panels above each entrance. The north elevation has an asymmetric projecting gable with a window similar to the front, but smaller. The south gable was originally a mirror image of the north gable, but has been altered with modern double garage doors covering much of the lower half, obscuring much of what was formerly a central window. The rear gable has been rendered and includes two recently enlarged mullioned and transomed windows, matching the style of other windows. Small fixed light windows are found on the north and south facades of this rear projection. Two Velux windows have been added to the front and rear. A tall, narrow rendered chimney is located on the northeast side of the building.
The school was built in 1903-1904 in memory of Frederick Crommelin by his widow, Mrs. Nina de La Cherois-Crommelin, who previously resided at Carrowdore Castle. It amalgamated with Woburn school in 1927 and closed in 1963. Between the 1970s and 1980s, the building was used as a factory. It was subsequently purchased and converted into a dwelling house in the later 1980s.
