Description
The former Ballyfrenis Presbyterian Church is a plain gabled building, likely constructed in the mid-1880s, and possibly renovated around the same time. It is situated on a slight rise on the west side of Abbey Road in the small hamlet of Ballyfrenis, approximately 1.5 miles west of Millisle.
The church is built with rendered walls and a slated roof, finished with rough cast and featuring chamfered quoins, a plinth, eaves course, and moulded verges. The front, east gable, has a central four-centred arch doorway with a label moulding above and steps leading up to it. The doorway contains double doors made of sheeted timber. Two pointed arch windows, with timber frames containing many small coloured leaded lights, are positioned on either side of the doorway's label moulding. Directly above the doorway is a grouping of three similar windows (on the same sill), with the central window being larger and featuring a label moulding. The north and south facades each have three larger pointed arch windows with ‘Y’ timber frames and many small coloured leaded lights. A small basement level doorway, with a sheeted timber door, is located on the left side of the north facade. Two pointed arch windows, similar to those on the front gable, are present on the rear gable. The roof is pitched with Bangor blue slates and has a mixture of cast iron and PVC rainwater goods.
There has been a church on this site since 1843, but the building’s style suggests a later construction in the mid-1880s, according to Grace Seymour's local history. The church remained in use until recently, when the Ballyfrenis congregation merged with that of Carrowdore.
