Description
The site represents the former location of a single-story cottage, likely dating from the mid-19th century (1840-1859). It was demolished around 1980 and a modern house now occupies the same footprint. The cottage was situated off a short lane on the eastern side of Abbey Road, within the small hamlet of Ballyfrenis. The original building was described as having a corrugated asbestos roof, gable ends, rendered chimneys, and rendered white walls. It had three double-hung windows without astragals, and a projecting porch between the first and second windows. A shed roofed door led to a porch. Sheds were located at both the left and right hand gable ends, each with sheeted doors, with the right-hand shed being set back. An Ordnance Survey map from 1858-60 depicts a building on this site, likely corresponding to the one subsequently demolished. Historical records, including 'Griffith's' valuation for 1863, document the cottage’s existence. Grace Seymour’s 'Echoes of Millisle and district' provides further context concerning the history of the surrounding townland.
