Description

Tir N'an Og is a decorative burial ground of the Stewart (Londonderry) family, laid out in the early 1930s on a wooded hillside within the Mount Stewart estate, roughly a quarter of a mile north of Mount Stewart house itself. It overlooks an artificial lake and was built by Lady Edith Londonderry as the final resting place for herself, the 7th Marquess, and their daughter, Lady Margaret Stewart. The site was acquired by the National Trust in 1986.

The burial plot is roughly square in plan and resembles a garden with stone paths arranged in a Celtic cross pattern, with a small stone pedestal at the centre. Three grave slabs are positioned on the south side. A low stone wall with clay urns runs along the south edge, punctuated by squat stone-built corner turrets. Each turret has a slate-covered conical roof and contains door and window openings. The east and west sides are bounded by tall hedges, each with a stone-built arched gateway at its centre. Small walls are attached to the outer sides of each gate post, with large arched niches on their inner sides—three of which contain statues of Irish saints. Decorative wrought iron gates hang within each arch.

A tall hedge continues around the north side. At its centre stands a squat, stone-built two-storey tower with round buttresses at each corner, each rising to a pinnacle, and a slated hipped roof. Arched openings on the north and south sides of the ground level pass through the tower into the burial ground proper. A flight of stone steps on the east side of the tower leads to a doorway at the upper level. Three window openings pierce the south side of the upper level.

The entire structure is executed in an Italianate folly style, with the boundary walls, turrets, and tower forming the extent of the listing.
