Description
Ballyblack Presbyterian Church is a small, plain gothic church built in random rubble in 1872, situated on the south side of Ballyblack Road approximately two miles west of Carrowdore. The building retains much of its original character but was stripped of most of its stained glass windows during the Second World War when German bombers unloaded ordnance in the area before returning to the continent. The church was deemed not to warrant listing due to insufficient architectural merit.
The church is set on a slight slope and comprises a main gabled body with a tower-like projection to the right (east) of the north facade and a gabled projection to the left (west). The north facade features a large central gabled section with a pointed arch timber window containing four lights with tracery above, resting on a cill course and flanked by sandstone dressings and label moulding with carved stops. Above the window sits a small sandstone-dressed quatrefoil. A sandstone bellcote crowns the gable apex. The tower-like projection to the right has a pyramidal roof of Bangor blue slate and contains a timber-sheeted double entrance door at ground level, set within a pointed arch opening with chamfered 'in and out' sandstone dressings, label moulding and carved label stops. Directly above the door on the upper level are two tall slit windows with sandstone dressings and a small dated sandstone roundel. Both the main gable and tower projection are buttressed.
The north facade of the left projection is blank and buttressed. The east facade of the tower projection features tall slit windows at ground and upper levels matching those on the north facade. The east and west facades of the main body contain three large pointed arch windows each, fitted with yellow brick 'in and out' dressings, modern timber frames and semi-opaque glass. The rear gable features a large central gabled projection. The east facade of this rear projection contains a pointed arch window with yellow brick dressings, a timber frame and semi-opaque glass. The gable of the rear projection displays a large rose window with stained glass, now covered by a recent timber frame and glazing. Below this at ground level is a pointed arch doorway with yellow brick dressings and timber-sheeted door, flanked by a small window opening with similar dressings and timber frame. The east and rear projection facades are buttressed. The west facades of the main body and rear projection match the east sides. To the left (north) on the east facade stands a buttressed gable containing a pointed arch window similar to those on the main body's east facade.
The main roof and that of the rear projection are pitched and covered in Bangor blue slates with stone parapets, which may once have borne finials. Cast iron rainwater goods are present throughout. The front entrance is approached through a rubble and yellow brick gate post structure with steps, a wrought iron arch and gates.
The Ballyblack Presbyterian congregation was established in 1811. The present church was constructed in 1872 during the ministry of Reverend William Mitchell, who also built the manse approximately one mile further west along Ballyblack Road, now a private residence. The bellcote was added in 1928. A small graveyard surrounds the church, containing headstones dating back to 1847.
