Description
A one and a half storey house on the west side of a long lane south of Drumawhey Road, approximately 3.5 miles west of Millisle. The building originates from the eighteenth century as a single storey dwelling. The roof was raised slightly around 1880, at which time a gabled half dormer was added to the front and decorative surrounds were fitted to the front windows and door. A galley kitchen at the rear may also date from this period or from the early twentieth century. In around 1980, the current owner undertook a comprehensive renovation, completely gutting the interior and adding substantial extensions to the north and west sides that more than doubled the building's size. The gallery kitchen and rear outhouses were demolished during this work.
The front south facade features a central panelled and glazed door with modern timber windows to each side. Directly above the doorway is a semicircular headed window opening with modern frame set within a gabled half dormer. The main east gable has two upper level windows with modern frames. The rear and west gable are now dominated by a large modern return extension that is one and a half storeys to the rear but slopes to one storey to the west, where it extends from the west gable and joins with a hipped roof conservatory and sun room section. The entire facade is covered in dry dash limestone chip render with quoins. All roofs are pitched with asbestos-free slates, featuring various dormers and half dormers to the modern extension and two large Velux windows to the front of the original roof. Two yellow brick chimneys serve the original roof. PVC rainwater goods are fitted throughout.
The house has been in the present owner's family since the later eighteenth century and appears on Ordnance Survey maps of 1833–34 and 1858–60. During the 1980 renovation, the owner discovered a large deliberately made cavity in the rear wall, which local tradition (probably correctly) suggests may have been used to conceal pikes during the turbulent 1790s. It had been the owner's intention to preserve the decorative surrounds to the front openings, but unfortunately these had to be removed during the work.
