Description

This is an 1840s, single-storey Methodist church situated at the crossroads in the small village of Glastry, Newtownards. The church is a simple gabled structure with a later gabled porch attached to the front and a rear extension.

The front, north-west gable features a central gabled porch with a central window having a semi-circular arch head and horizontal and vertical astragals. A slim cill is present beneath the window. Two timber notice boards flanking the window display the words "GLASTRY METHODIST CHURCH" in timber letters. The porch has glazed double doors on the left side and a blank right side. The main gable features a broken pediment with a small semi-circular arch niche and cill. Both the gable and porch have chamfered quoins. The north-east side of the church has three tall sliding sash windows with horizontal and vertical astragals and semi-circular arch heads, mirroring the arrangement on the south-west side. Some window panes contain patterned and coloured glass. A gabled extension projects from the rear gable with a steel eight-pane window on the south-west side and a timber panel and glazed door on the north-east side. A small lean-to projection is attached to the gable of the extension, featuring plain timber sheeted doors on both the north-east and south-west sides, and a small two-pane window to the rear. The main roof and extension roofs are pitched with Bangor blue slates on the main church and asbestos slates on the extensions. Stone parapets are present on the main roof. The facade is finished with line render and painted, and the building has PVC gutters and downspouts. A low red brick wall runs along the front and north-east side of the church.

A date plaque above the original entrance, now within the porch, reads "Wesleyan Church A.D. 1848", indicating the building's construction year. The porch and rear extensions are later additions. The church is currently in use as a Methodist church.
