Description

A large, plain two-storey farmhouse with a single-storey extension and modern alterations, situated on Manse Road on the outskirts of Glastry village. The building is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map with an L-shaped plan, but the extension was expanded to create a T-shaped plan by around 1850.

The main house has a gabled pitched roof with Bangor blue slates and two brick chimney stacks. The front (north-west) elevation features a timber and glazed door with moulded quoins surround and keystone to the right, flanked by PVC windows—two 2-pane windows to the left of the door and three similar windows to the first floor. The north-east gable of the main house is blank. The south-west extension is single-storey to the north-west and south-east elevations but rises to two storeys at the rear, presenting a T-shaped form. Its south-east elevation has a central entrance with a PVC door, fanlight and sidelights, with large PVC windows on either side. The north-west elevation shows a vertical stroke of the T with a single two-pane PVC window attached to the gable of the main house, with the blank gable of the horizontal stroke to the right.

The north-west, north-east and south-west facades of both main house and extension are finished in lined render with moulded chamfered quoins. The rear is finished in limestone chip render with a smooth cement base. The vertical stroke of the T has a pitched roof with Bangor blue slates to the north-east side but a flat roof to the rear. The horizontal stroke of the T has a Bangor blue slate hipped roof. PVC gutters and downspouts are throughout. A small lean-to store for a boiler sits to the rear of the extension, with large farm buildings to the rear and traces of demolished farm buildings to the north-east.

Photographs from 1971 show the extension with a decorated doorway and much narrower windows with horizontal and vertical astragals, indicating the extension received its present form around 1840-50. The 1860 Ordinal Survey map revision confirms the current T-shaped plan. According to the present owner, the extension was constructed to provide living space for relatives of a former owner who had returned from abroad.

The building has been substantially altered with the replacement of original windows and doors with PVC equivalents, resulting in loss of historic fabric and architectural quality.
