Description

This is a two-storey farmhouse, likely of mid-19th century origin, located on Manse Road, southwest of the small village of Glastry, near Newtownards in County Down. The building has been extensively modernised and is currently used as a house.

The architectural style is now largely defined by modern additions. The northwest-facing front facade features a slightly off-centre aluminium and glazed entrance door, accompanied by a large two-pane aluminium “sidelight” to the left. There is a modern two-pane aluminium window to the left of the doorway, and another to the right. Three windows, slightly smaller than those on the front, are visible on the first floor. A lean-to garage extension is attached to the northeast gable, with the northwest facade of the garage obscured by a tall, castellated wall that is flush with the front of the house. The southwest gable is blank. The rear of the house has a two-storey pitched return with various sizes of aluminium windows. A large aluminium conservatory is situated between the return and the left side of the rear of the main house. The entire house, including the castellated wall, is finished with a limestone chip render, with smooth cement surrounds to the windows and along the base, edges of the wall, and as a course along the gables. The roofs are gabled and pitched, covered with Bangor blue slates and featuring stone parapets. Two concrete brick chimney stacks are visible on the gable ends of the main house. PVC gutters and downspouts are in place. A low-rendered wall runs along the front of the house. A rubble-built outhouse is located at the rear, and modern farm buildings are situated to the northeast.

The house is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1860 without the rear return and with a more extensive complex of farm buildings. The front facade previously had a decorated doorway and simpler window surrounds in the style of approximately 1850 to 1860. Sources consulted include Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1860, valuation records from approximately 1835 and 1863 held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), and architectural plans. The farmhouse was constructed between 1980 and 1999.
