Description
A substantial two-storey farmhouse, likely dating from the mid-nineteenth century (approximately 1840-1859), now stands derelict and significantly overgrown. Located a few miles south of Ballyhalbert, the building is situated on a hillside. The house has been derelict for a considerable time, with substantial vegetation obscuring much of its form. The eastern elevation retains some visible window openings and a front doorway set within an elliptical arch, although the frames are missing and the door is extensively rotted; two large yew trees partially obscure the elevation's center. The south gable remains largely visible and blank, while the north gable and rear are concealed by foliage. The rear of the building shows rubble construction revealed by the loss of any original render. The front elevation, with its gabled and pitched roof, retains many of its Bangor blue slates, though gaps are beginning to appear. The rear roof is significantly damaged, with roof laths exposed. Four rendered chimney stacks remain largely intact. Several former farm buildings around the house have partially collapsed.
According to an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, the house appeared as it does today. When surveyed in 1971 (while still occupied), it presented as a substantial early to mid-nineteenth century farmhouse featuring sash and case windows and an elliptical arch fanlight above the front door. The relatively small size of the upper floor windows, compared to the larger ground floor openings, suggests the possibility that the upper storey may have been added later, or that the ground floor openings were enlarged at some point. Valuation records from approximately 1835 and 1863 exist at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI).
