Description

This is a compact, two-storey, hipped roof farmhouse built around 1850 to 1860, situated on a rise off Glastry Road, approximately a mile west of Kircubbin. The rear of the house has been substantially extended, likely in the early 1900s.

The front, or southwest, elevation features a centrally positioned timber panelled door with a decorative ‘radial’ segmental arch fanlight and decorative sidelights, framed by decorative timber pilasters with brackets. To the left of the doorway is a sliding sash and case window with horizontal astragals, with a similar window to the right of the door, and three evenly spaced windows to the first floor. The northwest gable has two similar ground floor windows (with one on the left slightly smaller), and one window to the left on the first floor. The gable merges into the gable of a full-height lean-to extension at the rear. The southeast gable has similar windows to the right on both the ground and first floors, the first-floor window being shorter. The rear elevation incorporates a gabled two-level return at the left and a full-height lean-to extension to the right. Most rear windows are similar to those on the front, although a modern timber kitchen window is present on the ground floor, to the right of the lean-to extension. The front and gables of the main house are finished in lined render and painted, with chamfered quoins and a chamfered plinth, while the rear is rough cast rendered. The main house roof is hipped, with a gabled return. All roofs are covered with Bangor blue slates, with two corbelled yellow brick chimneys centred to the main roof. A taller red brick chimney is located on the gable of the return. Cast iron gutters and downspouts are present. Rubble-built outbuildings stand to the rear.

An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 shows buildings on this site, but none match the size or positioning of the present house. A revised map from 1860, however, depicts the main section of the house roughly as it stands today, suggesting a construction date between approximately 1835 and 1860. The style of the original window frames suggests that the house was likely built in the 1850s. The decorated doorway was recently restored.
