Main Street in Kircubbin is a largely two-story streetscape comprised of terraced houses, shops, and offices, primarily dating to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. While many buildings have been modernized and lack significant architectural detail, others retain original features. The northeast side of the street appears to be generally older than the southwest, and likely contains some of the town’s oldest buildings.

The development of Kircubbin is generally considered to have begun around 1790 when the Baillie family encouraged the village’s growth through lease agreements. However, a settlement existed prior to this, with some houses recorded as built in the 1760s and an early plan of Main Street appearing on Taylor and Skinner’s 1777 map. Some eighteenth-century buildings may still stand, albeit altered, such as numbers 34-42. The majority of the buildings date from the opening decades of the nineteenth century, a period of prosperity for local trade and small-scale manufacturing. Buildings on Main Street were constructed between 1820 and 1839. The street is not formally listed, and individual buildings are referenced in separate records.
