Description

35 Main Street is a two-storey terrace block of possible late 18th century origin, with substantial alterations carried out in more recent times. The informal arrangement of the facade at Nos. 35 and 37 possesses a certain quirkiness which may indicate that this section at least may have begun life as a single storey building.

No. 35 is a small shop with a 19th century timber shop front consisting of a timber double door at the left with two adjoining fixed light windows to the right. Each window and door is encased with panelled timber pilasters with brackets, all supporting a timber sign board now with a modern laminated sign placed over it. An internally illuminated projecting PVC sign stands above the sign board. The walls are finished in plain render.

No. 37 holds a flying lease over No. 35 and its upper floor window openings have been enlarged. Nos. 35-41 all have Bangor blue slated pitched roofs with seven concrete block chimney stacks and cast iron rainwater goods.

A terrace is shown on this site on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834. The owner of Nos. 35-37 has deeds dating back to 1784. However, this section of the terrace, with its large upper floor windows, may have had its facade altered or roof raised, perhaps around 1840-1850. Both properties belonged to William Herron, a member of the locally important Herron family, in the middle decades of the 19th century, and have been in possession of the Maxwell family since 1899. Photographs dating from around 1910 show the shop and house much the same as today. These same photographs reveal that No. 33 had what appears to be a small shop or office front where two windows to the left of the entrance are now, and two more chimney stacks which have since been removed.

This building once served as the local Royal Irish Constabulary station, though local tradition claims that No. 65 Main Street also fulfilled the same purpose. No. 41 was formerly a house but has been a hardware shop and is now a chip shop; as a consequence its facade has been greatly altered.
