37 Main Street, Kircubbin, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2SR

Number 37 Main Street in Kircubbin is a two-storey terrace block of possible late 18th-century origin, though large sections have been significantly altered in recent times. The building is graded as B2 and forms part of a varied terrace containing shops and dwellings in the northern half of the village's Main Street. Number 37 holds a flying lease over the adjacent Number 35.

The ground floor facade displays an informal arrangement that suggests a certain quirkiness. To the left is a combined large store door and entrance door. The entrance door is timber panelled with a semi-circular fanlight above, though this fanlight is only partly glazed as it rises into the level of the first floor joists and is blocked at its top. Both door and fanlight are set within a reveal with pilasters and plain moulding to the semi-circular arch, a design very similar to terraced dwellings elsewhere in Newtownards. Adjoining the entrance to the left is a large but low store door with plain sheeted timber double doors encased with pilasters and lintel, with the right-hand pilaster joined to that to the left of the entrance door. To the right of the entrance is a sliding sash and case window with horizontal and vertical astragals. The first floor contains three similar windows but with moulded surrounds featuring keystones.

The arrangement of floor and window levels is notably cramped and awkward. The upper floor windows are positioned directly above the ground floor openings with little or no gap between both floors, causing the first floor to appear as if bearing down on the lower level. This suggests that this section of the terrace may have either had its roof raised at some point or its upper floor window openings enlarged.

Numbers 35 and 37 are finished in plain render. To the rear stands a large, dilapidated-looking full-height gabled return-like store, which does not appear to be internally linked to the house. It is built in rubble with brick dressings and partly rendered, with small upper level windows to the north-west side. To the south-east side of this return is a more recent full-height hipped roof extension with chimney stack.

Documentary evidence shows a terrace on this site in the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. The owner of Numbers 35-37 possesses deeds dating to 1784, though it is suspected that this particular section of the terrace, with its large upper floor windows, may have had its facade altered or roof raised around 1840–50. Both properties belonged to William Herron, a member of the locally important Herron family, during the middle decades of the 19th century, and have been in the possession of the Maxwell family since 1899. Photographs dating from around 1910 show the shop and house much as they appear today. The building once served as the local RIC station, though local tradition claims that Number 65 Main Street also fulfilled this function. The informal arrangement of the facade may indicate that this section originally began life as a single storey structure.
