Description

Two storey terrace block of possible late 18th century origin, with large sections much altered in fairly recent times. Number 39 is largely bland and devoid of detail.

This varied two storey terrace containing shops and dwellings is set within the northern half of Main Street in the village of Kircubbin. Number 39 has a timber and glazed door to the right and a fixed light window to the left. The rear of numbers 39 to 41 contains a mixture of sliding sash and case windows and PVC windows. A small lean-to extension extends from the rear of Number 39. The front facade of numbers 39 to 41 is finished in lined render with plain render to the rear. The property has a Bangor blue slated pitched roof with a concrete block chimney stack and cast iron rainwater goods.

A terrace is shown on this site on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834. The owner of numbers 35 to 37 has deeds dating back to 1784, though it is suspected that this section of the terrace, with its large upper floor windows, may have had its facade altered or roof raised around 1840 to 1850. Both properties belonged to William Herron, a member of the locally important Herron family, in the middle decades of the nineteenth century, and have been in the possession of the Maxwell family since 1899. Photographs dating from around 1910 show the shop and house much the same as today. The same photographs reveal that Number 33 had what appears to be a small shop or office front where two windows to the left of the entrance are now, and two more chimney stacks which have since been removed. This building once served as the local RIC station, though locals claim that Number 65 Main Street also fulfilled the same purpose. Number 41 was formerly a house but has served as a hardware shop and is now a chip shop, and as a consequence its facade has been greatly altered.
