59 Main Street, Kircubbin, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2SR

59 Main Street is a large two-storey gabled terrace of shops and dwelling located on the south-west side of Main Street in Kircubbin. The building dates from the late nineteenth century, probably between 1870 and the 1880s, though evidence suggests it may not have been constructed as a single unified block but rather built incrementally with later decoration applied to create the appearance of a formally planned structure.

The front facade is finished entirely in lined render with chamfered quoins, an eaves course, and a plinth. The ground floor of No. 59 contains a modern shop front with a glazed door and large fixed light window, topped with a PVC shop sign. The first floor across the entire terrace features nine unevenly spaced sliding sash and case windows with horizontal and vertical astragals and simple moulded arch surrounds. These windows sit on a cill course with two small brackets beneath each opening. The exposed sections of both gables are blank. The pitched roof is fitted with four unevenly spaced chimney stacks—one at each gable and two positioned close together to the right of centre—and stone parapets. Cast iron gutters and downspouts run along the eaves.

The interior of the shops and the apartment above (which occupies the entire first floor) has been modernised. The apartment retains its original sash windows, though the ground floor shop fronts vary; one is entirely modern whilst the other retains a largely traditional appearance.

The rear of the terrace has been extended with a modern single-storey lean-to extension serving Nos. 55-59, and most windows at the rear have been replaced with modern frames. Large rubble-built outbuildings stand to the rear.

Ordnance Survey mapping from 1834 shows buildings on this site that do not correspond exactly with the terrace visible today, suggesting the structure may have been added to on at least one occasion. The uneven arrangement of windows and chimney stacks supports this theory. The decorative detailing of the window and door openings, similar to that found on the manse further up Main Street, indicates a mid to late nineteenth-century date, likely the 1870s or 1880s, though the building's fabric has not been investigated to confirm this. In recent times No. 55 housed the Northern Bank. No. 59 was converted to shop premises sometime after 1970, replacing earlier features including a panelled double door with fanlight and moulded surround, along with a sliding sash and case window.
