Description
Balligan Church of St. Andrew is a simple single-storey gabled parish church built in 1704, located within a graveyard enclosure in the small hamlet of Balligan, two miles south-west of Ballywalter, County Down. It was constructed to serve the combined parishes of Ballyhalbert, Ballywalter and Inishargy, whose original churches had fallen into disrepair or ruin.
The church is built with rough-cast walls and 'smooth' (nearly flat) quoins. The roof is pitched with Bangor blue slates and stone parapets. The western front gable features a centred porch with a lower roof pitch, added around the late 1700s (prior to the 1830s). The porch has a heavy, plain, unframed double-sheeted timber door in the centre, with a simple pilaster surround, square head and keystone. Directly above the door is a small window set within a gothic arch, containing diamond leaded panes with some coloured glass and a stone architrave, now painted. The north side of the porch is blank, while the south side has a small 'Georgian' window with horizontal and vertical astragals. The main church gable wall is otherwise blank, with a stone bellcote at the apex.
The north side of the main church has two narrow rectangular window openings with diamond leaded windows and hopper openings. The south side matches the north elevation. The east rear gable has a large semi-circular arch-head window with mullions and transom containing small leaded square panes. A small enclosure with a low wall and simple railing is set to the rear of the gable.
The candle-lit interior retains its rustic simplicity. The church was renovated in 1886, at which time the side windows with hopper openings were probably installed, along with new window frames.
The church served as the sole place of worship for the entire area until 1843–50, when new churches were built at Ballyhalbert and Ballywalter and a new parish was created at Kircubbin. The small graveyard contains eight headstones, the earliest dated 1802.
