Description

This is a two-storey manse house dating from the 1850s, built with a Georgian appearance. It is located on Manse Road in the small village of Glastry, County Down, situated beside the Presbyterian Church.

The main house is a gabled structure with a decorated doorway, chamfered quoins, and a rear extension added in the 1920s. The front, or southeast, facade features a central timber glazed door framed by two freestanding Ionic columns that support a cornice lintel. Above the door is a recessed elliptical fanlight, all set within a simple elliptical arch head archivolt. To the left of the doorway is a PVC window within a chamfered architrave with a decorated surround, designed to resemble a Georgian sliding sash window with horizontal and vertical astragals between double glazing. An identical window is positioned to the right of the doorway, with three smaller, evenly spaced windows on the first floor above. The northeast gable is blank. The rear of the house features a large, full-height hipped roof return/extension to the right, along with a combination of PVC windows on both the extension and the original building’s rear. A small lean-to extension is attached to the rear of the main extension. The southwest facade of the main house merges with the rear extension and includes an L-shaped hipped roof bay with PVC windows on both levels. A PVC window is situated to the right on the original house’s wall, also on the ground and first floors. These windows generally follow the design of the front windows but vary in size and shape, and feature varying numbers of astragals. The facade is finished with lined render, and the rear is rendered plain. The roofs are covered in Bangor blue slates with red clay ridge tiles, and there are two red brick chimney stacks on the gables of the main house and one on the extension's roof. PVC gutters and downspouts are also present.

The manse was constructed between 1857 and 1859 and is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1860, originally situated behind some now-demolished cottages. The decorative elements on the windows are believed to be from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The rear extension was added around 1920, and the PVC windows were installed circa 1992. The interior of the manse has lost much of its original detailing.
