Description
A long rectangular single storey gabled vernacular block, formerly three small dwellings and now a restaurant, located at the intersection of Harbour Road and Main Street in Ballywalter. The building dates from the early 19th century, appearing on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, and represents one of the oldest surviving largely intact groupings within the village.
The gabled roof is covered with Tullycavey slates, though these are now largely obscured by bitumen or cement covering. The roof shows evidence of slight sagging. Stone parapets are present to the gables, with evidence at the rear of parapets denoting the walls of the former individual houses. Three small rendered chimney stacks rise from the building. Cast iron gutters and downspouts serve the roof.
The front south elevation is asymmetrical. A timber-sheeted door with a small glazed panel is positioned right of centre. To the left of the door are four shuttered window openings of slightly varying sizes, one of which was a doorway until recently. To the right of the door are two shuttered window openings, also of slightly varying size, with the rightmost window opening set within a door-sized recess.
The east gable is blank but has a gateway attached to its left side. The west gable features a small fixed light window to the left and a triangular timber sign at the gable apex. A wall continues from the left side of the west gable to the south gable of No. 1 Main Street. Former window openings at the rear appear to be blocked. The front and gables are finished in roughcast and painted pink.
The 1837 Ordnance Survey Memoirs describe Ballywalter as comprising cottages built of stone, mostly one storey high, many slated and plastered and whitewashed. This building would have been entirely typical of the village at that period. The conversion from three separate dwellings to a single restaurant use has involved the conversion of former doorways to windows.
