Description

The Church of St Thomas a Beckett is an Anglican parish church that was rebuilt in 1868 for the Portman family, with the exception of the 15th-century tower. The church features coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings, and has tile roofs adorned with fish-tail banding and coped verges topped with cruciform finials. The structure includes a nave, chancel, south porch, north vestry, and a west tower.

The three-stage Perpendicular tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and features an embattled parapet with pinnacles. It has 2-light bell chamber windows with a quatrefoil interlace, and 2-light windows on the south and west sides of the stage below. There is an ashlar turret on the north side with a spirelet, a 3-light west window, and a west door with a label. The remainder of the church is designed in a free Early English style, comprising a 4-bay nave with 2-light windows, a 2-bay chancel with lancets, and a 3-light east window.

Inside, the church has a plastered interior with an encaustic tile floor in the chancel and some fine terracotta tiling on the walls. There is a tile reredos and arch-braced king post roofs, with the chancel roof resting on reused 15th-century corbels. The church features a Perpendicular tower arch and a shafted chancel arch. A 11th-century tub font with chevron banding is present, along with a bier dated 1740. There is a 18th-century tablet in the nave by T King of Bath and two 19th-century tablets. Some stained glass from the 19th century can be found in the chancel, including the east window depicting The Crucifixion. A ringing chamber gallery is located under the tower.
