Description
Pylle Manor is a manor house, likely dating back to the 17th century, but substantially rebuilt in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The house is constructed of coursed and squared rubble with dressed quoins and features a moulded plinth band and a moulded band at the first floor level. It has a hipped slate roof, a 19th-century gabled dormer, and a single concrete block stack on the right side. The main block is square, with a wing extending to the right of the front facade; it includes a basement and two storeys with an attic, arranged over five bays. The windows are bead-moulded stone, two-light mullioned and transomed, with elaborately moulded architraves – those on the ground floor have a pulvinated frieze – and three bracketed sills. A door opening on the right has a tall moulded architrave and an eight-panelled door, with the top two panels cut away and glazed. A two-storey kitchen wing is set back on the left, and a lower wing is on the right, with a concrete double Roman tile roof. The right return is executed in a "mock Tudor" style and contains two bays with a ratio of 2:1, with two-light stone mullioned windows under stopped labels, the majority of which are renewed. Inside, a 17th-century fireplace is found on the ground floor, alongside an 18th-century staircase with turned and twisted balusters and a moulded handrail. Two-panelled rooms on the first floor include one with a bold moulded cornice. Other lesser features are also present. A walled garden is located at the rear, with brick walling and stone capping. An elaborate gateway on the east side features a wrought and cast-iron gate with cresting.
