Description
The entrance gateway and boundary walls to the churchyard of Christ Church were built between 1854 and 1856 by C. E. Giles. They are constructed from Ham stone and lias, featuring cast iron gates. The low stone wall to the east is made of cut and squared lias stone with angled Ham stone copings, which increase in height on the north side due to the drop in levels. The entrance gateway is located in the center of the east wall and includes panelled cast iron pillars adorned with strapwork decoration and deeply moulded knob tops. The pair of small gates has small circles on the bottom rail, X-braces with rosettes on the upper middle rail, which also features barbed spearpoints, a top rail, and scrollwork above, along with a central spearpoint. There is a simple wrought-iron overthrow with a bracket for a lamp and angled braces. This structure contributes to the setting of Christ Church and enhances the street scene on a prominent corner site in the middle of the village.
