Description

King John's Hunting Lodge, now Axbridge Museum, is an inn that dates back to the early 16th century and was restored in 1975. The building is timber framed with studding and prominent braces, featuring continuous jetties on the first and second floors supported by curved brackets. It has a moulded corner post on the left and a moulded string course at the first floor level. The structure boasts three prominent gables with cusped bargeboards and a double Roman tile roof, along with brick stacks.

The lodge has three storeys and an attic, with six single-light windows featuring ogee heads on the second floor, each with a quatrefoil in a circle in the spandrels. The first floor has similar windows, but they are paired, with an additional window in the face of each gable. The ground floor has six large 20th-century windows, each a single pane, inserted between the studs. There are three door openings with four-centred heads and ribbed doors.

On the return to The Square, the building maintains a similar style with two single-light ogee-headed windows on each floor, except for three large 20th-century windows on the ground floor, and a ribbed door in a four-centred surround. A section of coursed and squared rubble wall on the left forms a narrow pier. Inside the building, there is a carved and painted wooden head that was formerly placed at the angle between The High Street and The Square.

Originally, the building may have served as shops with living accommodation above.
