Description

27 and 29 Fore Street are two shops dating from the early 19th century. They are built of Flemish bond brick and feature clay tile coping on the party wall and rear gable, along with a stone cornice and cills. The buildings have a pantile mansard roof that is hipped and curves at the right corner, with a hipped rear left wing. The right rear wing has 20th-century coping and tiles. There is a rendered stack on the party wall. The buildings have a double-depth plan with two rear wings and rise three storeys with attics, each having a three-window range. The flat gauged brick arches above the windows are notable, as are the 6/6-pane sash windows on the second floor and the full-height 9/9-pane sashes on the first floor.

No. 29, located on the right, features a curved bay at the corner, with the parapet and cornice extending along George Street. The right-hand windows are part of this curved bay, and on the first floor, they are adorned with segmental iron balconettes featuring lead ornament on the vertical rails. The cornice and parapet continue around the right return, which has two smaller blind windows on both upper floors. The rear right wing, which lacks a parapet, has a three-window range with 8/8-pane sash windows on the second-floor left and a 10/10-pane sash on the right. The first floor has three large 8/8-pane sashes at different levels. To the far right is a lower one-window range of three storeys, featuring a 3/6-pane sash above one of the 8/8-panes, along with a 20th-century door and overlight. The shop front is also from the 20th century. At the rear of No. 25, there is a tall 18th-century service block with a lateral stack and hipped roof. The interior has not been inspected.
