Description

These offices, now two shops, were likely constructed around 1860-1870, and are believed to have been rebuilt following a fire in 1870. They are built of limestone ashlar and have a rectangular plan. The design is Italianate, with a symmetrical facade of four windows. The building features a moulded coping to the parapet and a rich modillion cornice that spans both buildings. A pilaster, resembling rusticated quoins, divides the facade. The third-floor windows have two panes per sash and segmental arches, set within moulded architraves. A decorative string course runs along the cill level. The second-floor plate-glass sash windows have moulded architraves with dentilled cornices, with a dentilled string course from which the cills are stepped out on consoles. The first-floor plate-glass sash windows are set in moulded architraves, with a plain cill band to number 11 and a higher moulded cornice above the shop fascia to number 10. Modern shop fronts replace earlier detailing. The interior has not been inspected. The design is comparable to other commercial premises at numbers 8 and 9 Cornhill.
