Description
These offices, now two shops, were built around 1860-70. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature a symmetrical six-window facade. The building is four storeys high and has a large, three-storey rear wing extending to the right. The architectural style is Italianate High Renaissance.
The building is topped by a balustraded parapet, supported by four piers. Below this is a cornice, ornamented with modillions and dentils, which returns to the right with a foliate frieze. Rusticated quoins are visible at the corners. The windows are 2/2-pane sashes and diminish in size on each floor; they are framed by moulded architraves. A string course, carrying a narrow foliate frieze, runs at the level of the third-floor sills. Cornices, moulded architraves, and consoles project from a string course to the second floor, supporting the window sills. Segmental pediments are above the first-floor windows, which also have a cornice at cill level, likely indicating a former fascia.
The interior has not been inspected. The design is similar to that of the adjacent commercial premises at numbers 10 and 11 Cornhill.
