Description
Somerset House is a 17th-century building located on the corner of Middle Street and Whirligig Lane. It has two storeys and is constructed of stucco with Tudor Gothic detailing. The left side of the front façade projects forward, topped with a slate roof that features a gable on the left and eaves. A quatrefoil is set in the oculus of the gable. There is a sill band and angle buttresses at the ground floor on the left side. The building has a plinth and a large three-light window with mullions and transoms in the projecting section to the left, accompanied by subsidiary single lights on either side. To the right, there are three windows with two and three lights, although one window is blocked. The windows have hoodmoulds and casements with horizontal glazing bars. The entrance is located on the left and is flanked by single lancets with hoodmoulds. It features a flattened pointed arch with a rectangular hoodmould, carved spandrels, and double wooden doors. Somerset House is part of a group of listed buildings on the south side of Middle Street, which includes Nos 13 Canon Street.
