Description
No 12 Middle Street is a tall square red brick house, likely built around 1700, situated at the angle of Middle Street. The rainwater head features the initials I.T.D, but there is no date provided. The house has parapets and three windows on each of its sides, with sash windows that have wide flush frames. On the ground floor, there are two round-headed windows. A later 18th-century Tuscan doorcase with a traceried fanlight is present. Inside, the house boasts well-preserved oak panelled rooms from around 1700 and a staircase with a panelled dado. To the left, there is a two-storey extension, and to the right, a pair of tall gatepiers can be found on the street.
This building is part of a group of listed buildings on the south side of Middle Street, which includes No 13 Canon Street. No 12 also contributes to the group with Nos 13 and 14 Middle Street on the north side, with No 14 being noted for its local interest.
