Description
The Camelot Club, formerly known as the Octagon Gospel Hall, is a Grade II listed building located on the south side of Middle Street. It is accessed through a narrow entry between Nos 7 and 8 Middle Street. The building dates back to 1776 and was originally a chapel where John Wesley preached. It is an octagonal, two-storey structure made of brick with a plain tile roof. The eaves feature moulded brick dentils, and there are round-headed windows on the lower floor with oeil-de-boeuf windows above. A later entrance porch is made of machine-made red brick. Inside, the building has a gallery supported by Tuscan columns around five sides of the octagon, with panelled gallery fronts that have a dentil cornice. Large recent extensions to the rear of the building are not included in the listing. The listed buildings on the south side of Middle Street, including Nos 15 Canon Street, form a cohesive group.
