Description

The Russel Monument and railings, located about 20 metres south west of the Church of St Michael, is an altar tomb dating from the early 19th century. It is made of Portland stone with white marble panels and is designed in a Soanian style. The monument features a stepped base and a moulded plinth, with plain panels on each face topped with moulded pediments and corner acroteria adorned with acanthus decoration. It is capped with a fluted and lidded urn. The monument commemorates Robert Brown Russel, who died in 1832. Surrounding the tomb are railings made of wrought iron, set directly into the ground, with twist spear tops and urn corner finials.
