Description
The Manor House is a semi-detached house dating from the 17th century, with some modifications. It is constructed of local lias stone that has been cut and squared, featuring Ham stone dressings. The roof is covered with clay pantiles, with an abutment to the south and a coped gable to the north, and it has stone chimney stacks at both ends. The building stands two storeys high and has three bays. The windows are hollow chamfer mullioned, with square labels and leaded panes; they consist of four lights, except for the lower bay which has five lights. A 20th-century doorway has been cut into what was formerly window bay two, leaving only the right-hand light intact.
Although the interior has not been seen, the Victoria County History notes that the ground floor contains the original hall of a mid-17th century house, which has been divided by a later partition. To the north is a parlour featuring moulded stone fireplaces, along with several stone doorways that have moulded arches and jambs. There is a former stair turret that projects at the rear and extensive cellars. A room on the first floor has an enriched plaster ceiling in an early style, and above the fireplace is an overmantel displaying the arms of the Doddington family. The house is believed to have been built by Sir John Strangways, who died in 1666 and purchased Somerton St Cleers Manor in 1638. It later became part of an earlier White Hart Inn and subsequently a shop.
