Description
Somerton Methodist Church, formerly known as Wesleyan Chapel, is a Methodist church dated 1845. It is constructed from local lias stone that is cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings, and features a Welsh slate roof behind a coped gable, with plain verges at the rear. The building is single storey with three bays on the front and side elevations. It has tall Y-traceried windows with simple arched labels, and the center window on the south gable elevation is shorter, positioned above a matching archway that contains a pair of four-panelled doors and a shaped solid panel with Y-tracery above. The gable also includes a quatrefoil vent and a rectangular carved plaque inscribed with "Wesleyan Chapel 1845". The side schoolroom extension at the rear has plain windows. The interior has not been seen. This chapel is located on or near the site of the original house that was first licensed in 1810 and is set well back from the road, making it an important feature in the street scene.
