Description

Old Brewery House and the first two outbuildings behind it to the north are a house and shop. The front dates from the early 19th century, while the structure behind is from the 17th century. The building is made of local lias stone that has been cut and squared, and it was rendered at one time, with painted Ham stone dressings. It features a double Roman clay tile roof behind a parapet between coped gables and has brick chimney stacks.

The building is two storeys high and has three bays. It has a plinth, traces of former pilasters, a cornice string, and a plain parapet. The modern shop windows have false glazing bars and are set in plain openings with dovetailed stone lintels. Above these are 12-pane sash windows, and there is a central six-panel door framed by a bolection mould surround, recessed and flanked by Doric pilasters with a full entablature as a hood.

To the right, there is a two-bay extension with matching 12-pane sash windows above, under a plain parapet, while the upper storey is roughcast and colourwashed. Below, there is a flat arched throughway with chamfered internal ceiling beams, flanked on the east by a rounded wall with a small pane casement on the curve. A semicircular arched window is located in the rear wall, leading to a long range of buildings, some of which were undergoing conversion in June 1984. The second building in this range has two-light chamfered mullioned windows. The interior has not been seen. This property is part of a varied row that contributes to the good streetscape value of the area.
