Description
Thatches is a detached cottage dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble made from a mix of lias and Ham stone, topped with a thatched roof that features stepped coped gables and a central brick chimney stack. The cottage has two storeys and two bays, with the first bay slightly projecting, likely indicating a later addition to what was originally a one-room plan. The first bay contains a boarded door, while the second bay has two 2-light horizontal-bar casement windows that are not aligned. There is a lean-to and a forward projection from the late 19th century against the west gable, which includes a 20th-century boarded door in the front gable of this extension.
Although the interior has not been seen, illustrated details indicate that there was originally an entry in the west gable, a large fireplace in the east gable, and a staircase alongside it. This cottage is a good, albeit modified, example of a once common humble cottage type.
