Description
The farm buildings at Cothelstone Manor, dating from 1867, consist of a barn over a cartshed with attached wings, forming three sides of a rectangular fold yard. The barn is constructed from red sandstone random rubble, featuring brick and white limestone dressings, and has a bitumen-covered slate roof with coped verges and kneelers, as well as a weathervane on the right gable end. It is two storeys high, with an arcaded basement built into the hillside, allowing ground floor access to the barn from the rear. The barn has five bays with depressed brick arches resting on bulbous white limestone cushion caps and masonry piers. The centre bay is blocked below the double doors, and there is a tablet dated 1867. The barn also includes ventilation slits.
To the right is a single-storey, two-bay cartshed with a slate roof that features a similar arcade. The next two bays are set slightly back and have had a rolled steel joist inserted. The cow house, which is single-storey and made of red sandstone random rubble, has a bitumen-covered slate roof and joins the barn at right angles. To the left of the barn is a two-storey L-shaped block with a door and window above in the gabled end, along with an attached two-bay single-storey lean-to in the angle, which has a corrugated iron roof. Overall, this impressive barn rests on an unusually handsome arcade.
