Description
The Hollies is a 17th-century inn located in Bower Hinton, constructed from ham stone ashlar. The roof features plain clay tiles over stone slates on the northern half and double Roman clay tiles over stone slates on the southern half, all set between coped gables. There are stone chimney stacks with traditional baffles. The building has two storeys and five bays.
The high plinth is present in bays three to five, which feature ovolo-moulded mullioned windows with configurations of 4+4+4+3 lights above, and a 5-light window in lower bay one and a 4-light window in lower bay three, all with labels except for the upper window in bay four. Bay five is an angled bay with a 1+4+1 light arrangement at both levels, topped by a flat roof. The window in lower bay two has been replaced by a 6-panel door, while lower bay four has a 6-panel door set in an architrave beneath a moulded flat stone hood.
On the south gable, there is a lean-to structure with a segmental arched doorway. The north gable features three triangular-headed stairlights, and there is a significant extension at the rear. The interior has only been partly examined; the north room contains a large open fireplace with a flat-chamfered timber beam, deep chamfered beams in a four-bay ceiling, and a plank screen with a triangular-headed door. The centre room has a cambered arched fireplace, and the south room features 18th-century dado panelling, with similar fireplaces and panelling found on the first floor. The roof is collar trussed.
