Description
Hirsts Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse located on Middle Street, dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of ham stone ashlar and features a thatched roof with stepped coped gables and brick and stone chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and is arranged in four bays. The windows are mostly ovolo moulded mullioned windows, primarily three-light, with a four-light window in the lower bay four and a blank window in the upper bay three. Bay two includes a flat-roofed angled bay with one plus four plus one lights. There is a continuous label over all the lower windows, including the angled bay. To the left of bay one, there is a small semi-circular arched stairlight, and to the right, a 20th-century part-glazed door set in a recess with an ovolo mould edge and a plain surround, sheltered by a small timber hood.
Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to have a three-room cross passage plan. The parlour features a depressed four-centre arched fireplace with a stone spiral staircase alongside, and chamfered beams with rounded steps and run-out stops. There is a similar fireplace in the hall, which also has a decorative plaster ceiling in the bay window. A relocated fireplace is found in the service room, which was originally a full-width fireplace. The roof structure consists of collar and tie beam trusses.
Approximately 2 meters from the house, there is a low stone wall with arrowhead railings and a matching gate at the northeast corner, which returns to the house at both ends, enhancing the setting of the farmhouse. On the east gable, there is a throughway leading to a former barn, which has been converted into a house but is not of special interest.
