Description

Bower House, located in Bower Hinton, is a house that was formerly an inn, dating back to the 17th century. It is constructed from Ham stone ashlar and features a plain clay tile roof with a plain south gable, coped to the north, and brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and consists of four bays. There is a continuous label over the lower openings and an eaves moulding. The windows include small pane casements in bay 1, a 3-light window above and a 4-light window below, along with ovolo-moulded mullioned windows. Bay 2 has a 2-light window, while bay 4 has a 3-light window on both levels. Bay 3 features an angled bay window with 1+4+1 lights on both levels, topped with a coped gable on shaped kneeler stones, a gabletted finial, and a square ovolo-mould panel. In lower bay 2, there is a moulded cambered-arched doorway with a boarded door.

Attached to the north gable is an early 19th-century range with a shallow-pitched Welsh slate roof. Bay 1 of this range has a 4-centre arched carriage opening with a 3-light casement above, where the centre light is rectangular-leaded. The remaining three bays have been converted into two houses and are not of special interest. Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain dated plasterwork from 1632 in a front room.

At the front of the house, there is an old raised pavement, approximately 750 mm high, made from Ham stone rubble with Keinton slab pavings and Ham stone edgings. This pavement features two steps at the north end and an extension to the south, forming an integral part of the house's setting and the streetscape. Bower House was previously known as the Red Lion Inn, which was licensed by 1795 and closed around 1970.
