Description
The lodge and gateway to Benter House is an early 19th-century structure located on the west side of Fosse Way in Stratton-on-the-Fosse. The lodge is built from coursed and squared rubble and features a hipped slate roof with paired polygonal ashlar stacks at the apex. It is square in plan and showcases a blend of Classical and Tudor architectural styles. The building is single storey with two bays, each containing two-light stone-mullioned windows that have stopped labels and mostly leaded lights.
At the center of the driveway frontage, there is a door opening with a half-glazed 20th-century door, framed by a stone portico that has a flat entablature and a triglyph frieze with metopes supported by two Roman-Doric columns and pilasters on the wall. The gateway is marked by a pair of rusticated ashlar gate piers, which have moulded caps adorned with key-patterned bands and a couchant 20th-century heraldic lion on each. The structure is flanked by rubble quadrant walls, which include further lesser rusticated ashlar piers on each side, also topped with hipped and moulded caps. Note that additional sections of wall attached to the structure are not included in the listing.
