Lodge And Gateway To Benter House

The lodge and gateway to Benter House is an early 19th-century structure located on the west side of Fosse Way in Stratton-on-the-Fosse. The lodge is built from coursed and squared rubble and features a hipped slate roof with paired polygonal ashlar stacks at the apex. It is square in plan and showcases a blend of Classical and Tudor architectural styles. The building is single storey with two bays, each containing two-light stone-mullioned windows that have stopped labels and mostly leaded lights.

At the center of the driveway frontage, there is a door opening with a half-glazed 20th-century door, framed by a stone portico that has a flat entablature and a triglyph frieze with metopes supported by two Roman-Doric columns and pilasters on the wall. The gateway is marked by a pair of rusticated ashlar gate piers, which have moulded caps adorned with key-patterned bands and a couchant 20th-century heraldic lion on each. The structure is flanked by rubble quadrant walls, which include further lesser rusticated ashlar piers on each side, also topped with hipped and moulded caps.
