Description

46 and 47 The Esplanade are a pair of early 19th-century houses. They are rendered and colourwashed, featuring a ground floor with channel rustication, a moulded string course at the first floor level, a moulded cornice, and a parapet with plain coping. The houses have a slate roof with a 20th-century box dormer, coped verges, and rendered stacks.

The buildings are two storeys high with a basement and attic, arranged in a 1:1:1:1 bay configuration. Each side of the houses has a grooved pilaster, and the cornice, parapet, and coping project forward above each pilaster. Each bay contains a two-storey canted bay window, with the same cornice, parapet, and coping detail above. The windows are three-light sash windows with glazing bars in each light, except for the left bay of number 47, which has French windows.

The main entrances are located at the rear, as the houses were built before The Esplanade was established. They feature six-panelled doors, with number 46 having a portico supported by paired fluted Ionic columns, although the bases of the columns remain at number 45, with the rest of the portico missing. The doors are accessed via elevated footways on vaulting, accompanied by wrought-iron railings and stone staircases.
